History
Founded soon after the discovery of the Lemuria Lowlands, Panostia began as a small outpost dedicated to operating a two-tiered lock system built for the safe navigation of ships between the standard voxel oceans and the waters of the Lowlands.
Architecture and funding for the original venture was an investment of Squid Dispensation Technologies. The company was naturally interested in the project. Panostia was seen as a profitable source of income that simultaneously offered exciting new opportunities for squid-related research in the unique marine geological region that is the Lemurian Falls. Due to the long-delayed release of any truly successful squid dispensing devices, this was a critical and well-timed boost in revenue for the corporation, with ancillary scientific benefits that will likely pay off handsomely in the future.
Travel
The H.M.S. Prefect travels from Panostatia across the Pangean Seas from the Triana and Aldarin Bay. The Awazakh is also in port and ferries travelers to Al-Sahel in South Myrtana. An asian-style ferry is also available to Xeng Shin from the lower docks. All three trips require a VoxelTicket, available from nearby lighted kiosks.
Port Complex
Panostia centers around its port and marine industries. In addition to the lock system for which it was originally founded, traffic through the city has led to the development of more extensive facilities. Panostia now features standard upper and lower docks, two drydocks for ship construction and/or refitting, and warehouse facilities for trade of goods in and out of Lemmuria. The city is still primarily a commercial facility, though Squid Dispensation Technologies is in the process of licensing several small, commercial ventures to support company workers and tourists passing through the area. So far, these projects include a cafe and hotel on the upper boardwalk and a Beardo-friendly short leaf shop in the western portion of the city.
The city publicizes official, up-to-date standards for ship sizes and dimensions that can currently be serviced. Of particular importance is that any VoxelOcean route wishing to travel through Panostia must use vessels conforming to the Lock dimensions below.
Lock system:
- Maximum absolute length (absolute furthest fore block to furthest aft block) = 37 meters
- Maximum beam (widest portion of the ship at any point) = 14 meters
- Maximum draft (extension below waterline) = 10 meters
Dry Dock:
- Maximum absolute length = 70 meters
- Maximum beam = 20 meters
- Maximum draft = 10 meters
Mushrooms
Several of Panostia's buildings are constructed in the stalks of a unique species of giant mushroom -- most notably, the Ambassador Hotel and the warehouse in Panostia's lower harbor. The mushrooms are native to Lemuria, and are most plentiful on the small chain of islands upon which Panostia is built. They can grow to the height of several stories and sport caps in the tens of meters in diameter. The mushrooms have a structure rich in cellulose and maintain a rigid shape, allowing them to be hollowed out and inhabited. The glowing substance excreted on the underside of their caps, in addition to providing structural lighting, is considered a culinary delicacy, although strict regulations on how much of the mushrooms may be harvested make dishes that include them rare and expensive.
SDT Neural Network Research Facility
The basement of the Squid Dispensation Technologies branch office in Panostia houses the research and development center for the only known neural network modular devices produced to date in the minecraft universe.
Prototype Free Energy Mirror Reactor
Panostia runs from energy derived from a small scale prototype of a power generation system harnessing free energy from the fact that Pangeans cannot be seen in mirrors. The reactor features a patented loop of mirrors with a Pangean specimen in the path, causing photons of light to be duplicated from thin air in order to satisfy the optical implications of not being visible in mirrors. Every photon of light must simultaneously bounce off the Pangean, in order for him to be seen normally, but also pass through the Pangean, in order for the view in the mirror to not depict him. Thus, light looped through the system will exponentially multiply for free. ~50% of the light is harvested, preventing meltdown and providing free energy which is used to boil water in a steam turbine for electricity. The steam stack is a prominent feature of the western end of Panostia's skyline.
