Transit
An AirVox balloon at the Spawn Point is docked and ready for passengers, linking to Whalesong Port in the Republic of Thysus
A highway system (for travel by cart or foot of course) will connect the few large cities, with rustic roads and paths linking hamlets to the highway system.
A system of river boats will make quick work of the long distances from the coast to inland communities (using voxelport).
Stage coaches are being explored as a road-based voxelport implementation.
Balloons are currently in heavy use for access from Whalesong port to new build areas.
Concept
The Republic of Thysus will become a nation of economy. The architectural themes will be heavily influenced by medieval European architecture, with a goodly bit of fantasy injected. The Palceon Pack is well suited to a steampunk flavor; the Republic welcomes steam tech builds.
Even with a goodly bit of fantasy, a dose of realism is, we hold, important. All of the build areas will be developed with an eye to realism. Communities need to grow food. Workers need homes. Everyone needs fresh water to drink. Consideration of how a build approximates real life will be a necessary step in the development process.
Communities
It is an inescapable truth that we tend to live together, in communities. The concept of community is important to the lives of people, and will be an important organizing concept of the Republic. Because of the orientation toward resource production, most communities in the Republic will devote their wealth to sustaining and enriching their communities. The general level of development will be low for most of the communities in Thysus.
Hamlets
The core of the Republic will be resource-centered hamlets. Small communities of 5-15 families will dot the map, each hamlet focussing on one or two geographically proximal (nearby) resources. A coastal hamlet may be built around fishing and sea agriculture (seaweed rice cakes for the win!). Life in the hamlet is centered on producing resources which can be exchanged for goods from other regions in the large trade centers. The hamlets themselves will be spartan, modest. Feature builds will often focus on the local resources.
In a nod to realism, there will be homes of sufficient number to accommodate all the trades people that will work in the hamlet. Hamlets will, more or less, have some staple builds:
- Townhall/Meetinghouse
- Watchtower (for border lands)
- Storehouse
- Grainary
- Well/Cistern
- Local agriculture
- Blacksmith
The architectural features of a given hamlet will be informed by the availability of resources. A lumbering hamlet will feature structures built with predominately wood-based materials. Proximity to a river will make river cobble and clay "inexpensive" materials to obtain, and thus common materials in design. Mountain hamlets, or ones near quarries, will have hewn and polished stonework featured throughout. Polished stones and metals will be available to all, but in a coastal fishing hamlet far in the south, the distance from the northern mountain mines will necessitate the precious little stone the community can afford will be devoted to the most important structures. For a fishing hamlet, this may include a drydock for fishing skiffs, cold storage for ice (used for packing fish for transport to the city markets), and a watchtower (if on a border).
Towns
Towns lie somewhere in-between hamlets and cities in terms of size and overall importance. Towns are to have two to three main economical elements. For example, rather than the traditional one-business hamlet, a town near the sea might provide fish, stone, and lumber for the rest of the Republic. Palette limitations are no different than those of a hamlet, but towns in Thysus generally appear less run-down and more polished than hamlets do.
Cities
The Republic will be home to only a small number of cities. In keeping with our goal at economic realism, Cities will be trade centers, concentrations of wealth and power, and will be fed resources from the hamlets. Consequentially, the available land of the Republic will only be able to support a few cities.
Presently, there are plans for a northern mountain city, rustic and heavy in stonework. The western-most prominence of the mainland of Thysus is the tentative home for a city to follow in the tradition of Droginwood Forest, of Pangea-of-Yore. In the far southwest is a large island. Current plans are to develop the island as a large city. These cities are unplanned or in the planning stages now.
Additional, major development has started on two cities in the Republic:
Ioneus
Led by TheGuyWhoCanFly, Ioneus is a successor to the widely popular Las Torres (of Pangea-of-Yore). Located in the southeast of the republic on a large penninsula, Ioneus is a city-state from antiquity, now a member of the Republic. The architectural style of Ioneus breaks strongly from the rest of Thysus, heavy in stone and masonwork reflective of a time long since past when the good of the city-state overrode all considerations for the welfare of the laborers.
Ioneus is also a military center for Thysus. Situated in the waters shared with the dread Federation of Ithea, Ioneus makes new use of old embattlements, serving as a border guard for the Republic and steward of safe seas for trade. A full battalion of Thysus soldiers will call Ioneus home, as will other force-escalation options.
New Cliffton
Led by Jomeaga, the tradition of building a residential community on dramatic Notch terrain continues in Holocene as wealthy citizens pour their funds into New Cliffton. Situated in a protected bay with river access to the northern mountain reaches, Cliffton engineers have made quick work of natural landforms to create a natural spring-fed cistern, held by masonry dams, to supply the community with fresh water. A network of walkways now criss-cross the face of the cliffs, making development of dwellings and shops possible.
The great Republic of Thysus suffered a devastating earthquake that shook the continent to its very core. The damage was extensive, but only centered around the city of New Cliffton. The locals believe this is the work of GOD, but he has not spoken on the issue. Yet, through the rubble, there lies hope.
Cliffton 3.0
The people of Cliffton have relocated themselves to an area created by the earthquake. The new area is situated on the water, and allows for bustling trade and fresh ideas. The citizens of Cliffton have agreed to make this new area their permanent residence.
The new city has the feel of the original Cliffton, but with new landscape and a new city layout. The re-built Cliffton will include residential areas, shops, a small harbor, and expansive farms.
The project of reconstructing Cliffton is being headed by johnsmom and Jomeaga, and is going to be accepting helpers in the future!
The Capital [Project on Hold]
Still in the planning phases, The Capital of the Republic of Thysus will be a bustling metropolitan area. Its builds will follow the style of AppleAssault's popular cathedral, using various stone textures and stairs to provide a unique level of detail and design. All users permitted to build in Thysus will be welcome to take part in this exciting new project.
Holds
The entirety of Thysus is split into five different holds. These uniquely named holds vary in size and may include any number of cities, towns, and hamlets. Due to the nature of the Republic, establishments within a single hold may produce similar or compatible economical products. Below is a color-coded map of the five Thysuthian holds and their names.
Contributors
The Republic is renowned for its support of architects dedicated to superior quality building and terraforming. Members aspiring to join the ranks of the few who wear the gold asterisk (denoting the player is an architect in the Republic) proudly should begin by contacting a Republic curator about becoming involved in the region.
The Republic believes in rewarding architects for distinguished work. Those players who are interested in building in Thysus must be fairly active in assisting in existing towns already in the region. With this requirement met, aspiring builders may request to rent a small workspace in which they are able to develop a concept.
Completion of a hamlet will allow architects to earn a building permit to develop a portion of one of the large cities of the Republic. With this graduation from hamlet development to city development comes a increased degree of autonomy. Less control by Republic curators translates to greater freedom to develop designs and styles (within the greater city concept).
While no formal plans exist at this time for a developmental step beyond city level building permits, the Republic has vast coastlines and considerable flagged waters, so the opportunity for island development is not inconceivable.
The general procedure for becoming an Architect of Thysus proceeds thus:
- Indicate interest to work in Thysus to a curator
- Work with the curator(s) to develop a hamlet concept OR sign on to work as a staff architect assisting with various projects
- Win approval of your hamlet concept (in your cubicle) and select land in Thysus to develop

Notable Locales
Whalesong Port
Built on the Pangea-of-yore map and briefly accessable via a balloon from Lehmann Airfield before finding a home in Holocene, Whalesong is a trade hub for the Republic. The structure of the port is a compass, with a large tree growing from the center that supports balloon travel within the borders of Thysus. A number of business have set up shop, including VoxelRadio and the National Pangean Society.
Grayrun
With food booths and carnival games, Grayrun is full of fun and festivity. Cruise along the waters on the assorted bird ride, or have a go at the arcade machines there. grayrun is a stop not to miss when you visit the northern areas of Thysus!
Brynshire
Located on the western tip of the Thysuthian continent, Brynshire stretches elegantly along the coast of Shemlar, and serves as the transport hub of the area. With a very stunning palette, and the most precise detailing, Brynshire is home to the most dazzling ships, and the most dirty of secrets...
The Hidden Thysus Army
Hundreds of soldiers and tanks are in wait to strike down any who oppose Thysus's will. The troops are currently inactive; waiting for the right moment to strike.
